Integrated Talent Management

Improving Multidisciplinary Healthcare Teams

Speaker: Charlotte Hughes

It comes as no surprise that effective teamwork can immediately and positively affect patient safety and outcomes. The time has passed when a doctor or any other health practitioner in a health organization would be able to solely deliver quality care that satisfies their patients. Co-morbidities and complex care needs are increasing along with higher healthcare costs. Research indicates 10 percent of complex care patients represent 62 percent of total healthcare costs. Given this reality, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals could ideally work together to determine diagnoses, develop care plans, conduct procedures, provide appropriate follow-up, and improve quality patient care. Yet we know that overall, teams frequently struggle to fully leverage their members’ diverse expertise and capabilities. Role clarity, decision-making processes, and timely coordination of efforts among specialists requires focus and ongoing communication. When dysfunctional multidisciplinary teams are permitted to exist, the productivity and well-being of healthcare team members are at issue and can impact patient outcomes. In this webcast, you will learn: - why multidisciplinary teams are valued and prevalent in healthcare - characteristics of multidisciplinary teams - common multidisciplinary team challenges - frameworks and tools to help diagnose improvement opportunities - strategies to enhance multidisciplinary team effectiveness.
